Born in Iran

Project type

Ceramic Sculpture

Date

May 2026

Location

Newmarket, Ontario

Born in Iran draws from the ancient Persian lotus motif, traditionally associated with royalty, peace, and humanity. The figure carries the lotus on her head, connecting her to Iran’s ancient cultural heritage, which forms the foundation of an Iranian’s resilience. The wounds across her eyes confront the brutality inflicted on innocent Iranian protesters, transforming a symbol of peace into a reflection on violence, loss, and resilience.

The sculpture itself went through many episodes of cracking and breaking during the process of making and firings, yet it resisted being discarded. It never gave up hope of being repaired, which further enriches the concept of the form and the motif.
